Upon approaching Mackinac Island by ferry the passenger is first greeted by these stately Victorian homes. Poised high on the bluff, they are like the dignified ladies of that romantic era that summered here more than a century ago. It seems as if they are greeting those wayfarers who have come to escape time on this isolated island. The flag blowing high in the wind is a small reflection of the heeling sailboat below. With the formality and grandeur of the summer homes, I appreciate the free spirited contrast of the sailboat boat below. In my imagination it is as if they are acknowledging each other.
