I love to create beautiful, quality, uplifting paintings that inspire viewers and invite them to bring their own experience, feeling and unique emotional response into the work. My paintings are a celebration of our natural world and my interpretation of it. I want my collectors to be proud of the paintings they own and find enjoyment in them for many years to come.
Landscapes in their natural state speak quietly and powerfully to my heart as an artist. A sense of peace and freedom come to me from them, and I have always been in humble awe of God the Creator and the incomprehensible endless vastness of His creativity.
Every walk or hike I take, every trail ride I have been on, every time I visit the Lake Michigan shoreline; my travels through the huge variety of wilderness areas or farmlands in our country with the visual distances I see and experience and all their different land forms, rhythms, textures, and colors graced by animals, birds and flowers ..... for many years I have said to myself I want them to "paint" themselves on the inside of me before I begin to paint them on canvas so that I can truly paint from my heart.
Having started with watercolors when I first started painting in 1985, I later began to feel a need to paint with a different medium that would help me bring more personal expression and substance to my paintings. After experimenting with acrylics, mixed media, and pastels, I then found painting in oil with palette knives to be a great artistic fit for my way of working, which I have been doing since 1998.
About seven years ago, I began experimenting by adding cold wax medium and mixed media materials such as beach sand to my oil paints. The varied surface textures and layering I could create opened the door for me to interpret and paint landscapes in a more abstract way, adding a contemporary dimension to my paintings.
I follow my heart in the studio, trust my instincts, paint with excellence as my goal, and use my knowledge of composition, use of a limited palette, and my desire for freedom of expression to create works that challenge me in new ways. And that makes me smile.
